The Treaty of Waitangi was signed by Captain William Hobson and several English residents on behalf of the British Crown, and by Māori chiefs (rangatira):
Captain William Hobson
Hobson was sent by the British Government to negotiate the treaty because they wanted to establish a civil government in New Zealand. Hobson later became the first Governor of New Zealand.
Māori chiefs
The first to sign was Hone Heke. The Māori text was taken around Northland to get more signatures, and copies were sent around the country. By the end of 1840, over 500 Māori had signed the treaty.
The Treaty of Waitangi was signed on February 6, 1840 at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. The treaty established British sovereignty over New Zealand.
