Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India was assassinated by the IRA (Irish Republican Army), on 27th of August 1979 along with his 14 year old grandson & 3 others. He was enjoying a day out with his family in Donegal Bay, Ireland, when the tragedy took place. His shipping vessel had a 50 lb.bomb and it also injured several members of the family. The IRA took responsibility for the assassination but only 1 person was convicted- an IRA member, Thomas McMahon. Later in the day, there were more land attacks conducted by the IRA, in which 18 men of the British troops were killed.
