The Japanese government approved a $18.5 million grant for flood management in Pakistan on November 13, 2024. The grant will be used for the following:
Dam construction: Three dams will be built on the Indus River in Haripur district to prevent flooding
Water and rain meters: 45 water and rain meters will be installed on the Indus River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab
Observation network: A hydrological and hydraulic observation network will be established
River structure rehabilitation: River structures damaged by the 2022 floods will be rehabilitated
Capacity building: Flood management institutions will receive capacity building support
The project is called “Flood Management Enhancement in the Indus Basin” and will be executed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The grant will help to reduce the risk of loss to the economy, infrastructure, and human lives from future floods.
